Collection: Earthpainting
“It doesn't stop being magic just because you know how it works.”
― Terry Pratchett
The Earth is such an incredible place when you step back and think about it. Everything in nature just works. With this deeply implanted genetic code it runs on systems that are logical and balance themselves, shifting resources around through seasons on every scale to create and preserve life. An acorn holds all of the information to one day become a giant oak tree with the potential to weather storms for a hundred years. Nothing happens in a vacuum and human beings are just as much a part of that network of shifting resources - even if that is something we often like to forget.
There is a long history of humans using pigments to render pictorial imitations of the natural world around us. By embracing technology I'm able to flip that idea on its head and use the textures that exist in the natural world as pigments to create abstract aerial photographs that borrow heavily from the compositional language traditionally found in painting.
I utilize familiar compositional structures to depict a conventional subject matter through a fresh new perspective. By elevating the viewer in the landscape to a perspective beyond which is familiar I am able to isolate moments in the landscape that offer the viewer an opportunity to emote and connect. In this way I respond to the landscape in which I exist and exalt its incredible beauty by adopting a visual language inspired by the study of Art History. Many of the Earthpaintings are structurally inspired by works of art from the Western Tradition. By increasing space between the viewer and the subject I hope to encourage contemplation of the true wonder that is the planet on which we've found ourselves.
Thank you dear reader for spending the time to get acquainted with part of the method behind the madness.
